David Ige: $10 million for HI Growth initiative to support innovation

We need to support business and industry so that they can grow our economy and create jobs. That includes our visitor industry, which has had three straight record setting years in arrivals and spending, totaling about $15 billion and supporting 175,000 jobs statewide.

It also includes the thousands of small businesses that make up the core of our economic engine--those ma and pa stores whose predecessors include success stories like Foodland and the ABC Stores.

We need to nurture an "innovation economy," in which entrepreneurs use technology to develop new processes and products from existing ones, like smart phone makers who have taken their products far beyond the original concept of a mobile phone and created entire new markets.

It's a whole new economic paradigm which we need to support with modern infrastructure, whether it's expanding our broadband network or building innovation parks. That's why we are providing $10 million for the HI Growth initiative to support innovation.

Mark Takai: End tax breaks for largest oil and drug companies

My wife and I own a small business. I will work to end the tax breaks for the largest multinational oil and drug companies, and end the Washington mentality that forces small businessmen and women to fight for their lives every day.

In Congress, I will push for tax credits and low interest loans for small business to open and expand. I will push for research and development incentives so all businesses--large and small--have an opportunity to be leaders in innovation.

Mazie Hirono: US Chamber of Commerce does not reflect business community

Linga Lingle's campaign manager criticized Democrat Mazie Hirono for criticizing the U.S. Chamber of Commerce endorsement this week of the Republican candidate. Excerpt from Lingle's press release: "Mazie's team called the organization 'a powerful right-wing mainland special interest group.' This charge is disingenuous and even laughable coming from Mazie, considering just a few months ago she proudly touted to the people of Hawaii that the Visit USA Act which she co-sponsored was backed by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce."

Hirono's campaign issued this statement in response: "We welcome the debate over who is best positioned to work with President Obama, help grow our economy, and create jobs. It is clear that the US Chamber of Commerce does not reflect the entire business community here in Hawaii."
